Misconduct

Postgame: Flames @ Red Wings - 11/23

Tonight's win wasn't the cleanest the Wings have had this season but it had a lot of good points, including the two points in the standings that the team will take regardless of how they played.

I said after the first period that it was a bit slow but that the Red Wings had managed to limit Calgary's chances so it was good. To start the second period, Detroit continued to play slow while the Flames came out with jump and took advantage. Detroit can't expect to coast and it could have bit them in the ass tonight.

Jarome Iginla's goal was textbook execution of an odd-man rush, aided by the fact that there seemingly was miscommunication on whether Nicklas Lidstrom or the backchecking Detroit forward would be covering him. Brendan Morrison's goal was in part a rookie/lazy mistake by Jakub Kindl, who ended up covering no one on the play. The Wings need to make sure they don't make a habit of plays like those.

That said, three out of four on the power play (and one just after the expiration of the man-advantage) is a very good thing to see from special teams that haven't been great this season. Tomas Holmstrom had a dominant night in front of Miikka Kiprusoff, with his two power play goals moving him into a tie with Brendan Shanahan for fifth place all-time in Red Wings power play goals.

I said that Calgary's third goal came off them taking advantage of the opportunity given to them when Darren Helm lost his stick. The Wings returned the favor with their fourth and fifth goals. Stupid penalty by Curtis Glencross put the Wings on the five-on-three and they made it work.

I'm back and so is Ian White, who rejoins the Red Wings tonight as they host the Calgary Flames.

White missed four games with a fractured cheekbone after blocking a shot with his face against Dallas on November 12.

Brendan Smith will be the odd-man out for Detroit, unless Brad Stuart is unable to go. Stuart is expected to be a game-time decision. If he can play, Smith will be returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Johan Franzen will also be a game-time decision, with Patrick Eaves taking his spot if he can't play.

Mike Commodore is the other scratch on defense. With Fabian Brunnstrom having been sent to GR to make room for Smith to stick around, there are no additional forward scratches.

Jimmy Howard gets yet another start in goal.

Game time is 7:00 PM. FSD has the TV.

Real nice deflection there. No chance for Kipper.

LIDSY!!!!

Kind of slow first period. I don't mind if it means Calgary isn't getting anything but I'd feel better if the Wings had more time in the Flames' zone.

Not thrilled with the Iginla goal. Rare case bad D by Lidstrom, or at least miscommunication with the forward coming back.

Just like that. Hell of a shot by Morrison but, damn.

Welcome back, Ian White. Not sure how that made it through.

That second angle looked like it hit a Calgary stick...

Bad first five minutes of the period for the Wings but they really dominated the final 15. Third will be interesting.

Great hands by Homer. Kinda shocked that didn't get called back on reputation.

Is it too much to ask for one more?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 11/23/2011 at 9:18 PM

Apparently not. Very nice goal there and Bert with a big screen.

Fed off the tail of that penalty...

Posted by DetroitRiver on 11/23/2011 at 9:20 PM

Wow, can't believe Sutter didn't pull Kipper for an extra attacker at the end there.

Big win, keep the streak going and climb in the standings.
