Misconduct

Game Three Postgame Notes

It may or may not be a popular opinion, Detroit hockey fans are notorious for their opinions on goalies after all, but I'm throwing Jimmy Howard under the bus for this loss.

San Jose's first and third goals never should have happened and they fall on Howard. On the first goal he got lazy and lifted his pad, giving room for Devin Setoguchi to slide the puck in. On the third goal he was off his post and in a stance that left too many holes open, making it possible for Logan Couture to bank a shot in off of him.

Brian Rafalski deserves some goat credit as well. As the defenseman on a two-on-one, your only purpose is supposed to be to cut off the pass. Rafalski failed to do that and didn't seem to make that much of an effort.

I can't decide if it's funny or not but the Red Wings accomplished pretty much every goal they said they needed to before today's game and they still lost.

They silenced Joe Pavelski. They didn't allow a single power play goal. They were better in the faceoff circle and they had more shots on net.

And they still lost.

Some people will continue to blame the refs but - while I didn't like a couple calls - this was the best-officiated game of the series. That said (and I said it at the time), the penalty shot call in the first period was absolutely horrible.

Which reminds me of the two coaching complaints I have.

One is that Todd Bertuzzi should have taken that penalty shot. He was one of Detroit's more reliable shooters in the tiebreaker during the regular season while Henrik Zetterberg was inconsistent at best.

The other is wondering how the hell the fourth line ended up on the ice against Thornton, Heatley and Marleau for the last shift of the game. I'm blaming Rafalski for that one but you've gotta wonder if it would have happened in the first place if another line had been out there.

I'm not sure what to think going forward. I think the Red Wings have the talent to win the next four but, like too many times in the Phoenix series, I'm not seeing the desire at all. They quit in the third period with a two goal lead tonight. That's unacceptable and if they're playing like that they deserve to lose.

I disagree with Mickey, this is coming back.

Figures

Told ya, but what the hell does "Distinct kicking motion" have to do with anything now that "propel" is the key word?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 8:01 PM

Here's why that goal should have stood, even though I knew it wouldn't. "Propelling" the puck into the net implies applying more force to the puck to make it go in. If anything, the puck slowed down after hitting Zetterberg's skate. Less force. Not propelled.

Call that one back, you sons of bitches!

Here we go again. They will call it goalie interference.

They're really trying. Hahahahaha. Watching hockey has turned me into a huge pessimist lately.PS - I agree with the crowd.

It was a f*cking joke! Godmotherf*ckingdammit.

Goddamned right that was a good goal.

I was worried because the ref looked worried.

Maybe they were worried because it actually went the Wings way for once? That could be a bad sign.

That? That's a penalty? After all the other bullsh*t that happens?

Posted by catmandu on 5/4/2010 at 8:14 PM

So their second guy in doesn't get a penalty? I have wanted to see the third, forth, fifth, etc all get penalties. A reach over and face grab....gone.

Holy sh*t, they called it? Bad call.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 8:18 PM

Wings get a bad call in their favor and don't take advantage. Remember that.

Okay. Starting with 2.

Lazy

Posted by scout6 on 5/4/2010 at 8:24 PM

Defense skating around in circles but Jimmy was lazy on that one.

That's what I didn't like there. Ericsson rides his man away from Howard, unnecessary but happens all the time. A second Shark comes in. Then Abdelkader comes in. Why does Justin get called but not the second Shark?

Zata takes after Steve Yzerman.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 8:45 PM

Mickey said, don't put yourself in the position for that to happen.

Posted by catmandu on 5/4/2010 at 9:02 PM

Power play looked good but needs goals.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 9:11 PM

Well f*ck. Wings have got to wake the hell up.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 9:48 PM

Wake the f*ck up guys!!!!! Your goalie bailed you out on that one!

Posted by SYfanSD on 5/4/2010 at 9:53 PM

That's two, Jimmy. You're not allowed to do that.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 10:00 PM

Quick whistle benefits the Wings there.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 10:01 PM

So much for "battling in front" eh?

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 10:09 PM

I don't even know what to think at this point.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 10:13 PM

Not surprised. No fire after the start of the third period.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 5/4/2010 at 10:40 PM

I am thinking I don't even want to watch game four. This series is ridiculous.

Conveniently, Thursday is the day I'm supposed to start building my deck. I might not even be able to watch the game.

Once again we are on the same wavelength! I agree again, this is definitely on the goalie. Lately he has a huge 5 hole and it is apparent that they have been doing their homework. 2 goals that should not have happened, the other 2 were on the shoulders of the defense. Once again, lazy play...when a puck is in front of you...GO GET IT! Don't stand there looking at it! I saw that happen many times - I was yelling at the screen. Your last paragraph sums it all up...yes they have the talent to win the next 4 but DO THEY REALLY WANT TO? Like in game 7 last year's cup...extremely frustrating as a Wings fan to watch!

Do we gamble on Ozzie?

Do we gamble on Ozzie?

Too late for that. Only one start since January? Can't risk it. Though how many critics would it silence if he were able to come in and rattle off four wins? I don't think he could but it'd kick ass anyway.

I think that if I were a coach whose team was having such a poor start to a third period in a game where we held a lead, I'd call a time-out and zap them each with a cattle prod! Is that "defensive shell" a strategy? We see it all too often....I always wonder what the opposing team takes between periods (that the Wings don't take) to come out flying when we sometimes seem to be skating in jello....

(And I totally agree that Bertuzzi should have taken the penalty shot.)

The following was my response to my daughter's email asking, "What happened? They were ahead 3-1 when I fell asleep!" (One might have replied, "Yes, they were ahead 3-1 when THEY fell asleep!"wink.png

Regarding the Wings: At first I couldn't believe (and thus FEEL) the loss. Then when I woke up early this morning (to the sounds of the waking birds and some mammalian sounds coming from the backyard), the feeling had set in...that they-lost-a- must-win-game feeling. That said, they could bounce back and win 4 in a row...not likely, but it could happen. Or they could be swept. If that happens, I just have to remind myself that they are always contenders...it's been a long and difficult season...hockey is a brutal sport...they've played more games in the last 3 seasons than any other team...the West is the best in the league...you cannot, absolutely cannot, win 'em all...and forced to choose, I'd always choose our Wings for reasons including and beyond their hockey expertise.
