Misconduct

Game Three Pregame Notes

Yeah, there's no such thing as a "must-win" until you're facing elimination but it's pretty clear that we're past the "feeling out" phase of this series.

The Red Wings did what they had to do in Glendale, they came back home with a split and turned the series into a five-game affair in which they have home ice advantage. "All" they have to do is hold serve at home and the series is theirs.

In Game One the Red Wings failed to play the kind of game they will need to play to win this series. In Game Two they got there but it wasn't a consistent sixty-minute effort. If the Wings continue to play the way they played the third period of Game Two, they will win this series.

They have to be strong on the puck. They have to drive to the net. They have to get shots through to Ilya Bryzgalov. They have to not back down from Phoenix's physical play.

The Coyotes, meanwhile, seem to be in a bit of disarray. They know they can win when they make the Red Wings play Phoenix's game but can they win one where the pace is dictated by Detroit? They're also battling injuries, with Vernon Fiddler and former Red Wing Robert Lang not yet confirmed to be in the lineup this afternoon.

We already know how I feel about afternoon games and games on national broadcasters. This one's a 3:00 start on NBC.

That all happened because Jimmy didn't get over for the wraparound. Should have ended there, instead it's a scramble.

pinching again, ericcson pinches, 2on 1 other way.

No wonder the NHL can't get new fans, the NBC guys are too busy telling a story to call the game. How can you learn about the game if they're not calling it?

Smart play by Helm. He knew he had no pass to Cleary so he threw it on net, knowing Bryzgalov would make the stop but that Cleary would be there for the rebound.

I thought it was more he got pyloned than it was a pinch.

that D pair should NEVER pinch... its LILJA and Ericsson...Slowest players on the team

You know what? I'm absolutely fine with that period. Kind of fluky goal early, Wings with almost all of the pressure from then on.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2010 at 4:02 PM

Doan runs over Jimmy and hurts himself. Hrm...

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2010 at 4:20 PM

Weak power play. Worrisome.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2010 at 4:22 PM

Wings have looked passive this period. Definitely not as confident as I was after the first, they've gotta wake up.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2010 at 4:35 PM

Can't really complain about a quick whistle. Damn.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 4/18/2010 at 4:45 PM

They needed a stoppage in there. Three or four minutes without a stoppage. Howard had the chance to freeze it earlier.

Both Phoenix goals off of weird bounces. I've lost my good feeling.

You also forgot to mention they're bad commentators. But I guess I'd take them over the people at Versus.

Anyone want to play some f*cking defense?

The Mule woke the f*ck up!

I'm sorry, that one's on Jimmy. Yeah, they gained the zone because of the line change but Howie saw it the whole way.

yzerfan you think lilja/ericson pair better than lebda lilja pair?.. unless lebda is injured . Anyways howard has let in 3, 4, and 4 goals in 3 games. Osgood will be in game 5 for sure if we lose game 4.

what a disappointment, hope osgood is in game 5

Honestly, I kind of want to see Lilja and Meech on the third pair right now. I haven't given up hope on Ericsson and think this is just a sophomore slump but he's a liability right now and there's no time for that.

I'm as big of an Osgood fan as anyone and I've already torn into Jimmy today but I don't think we're gonna see Ozzie this postseason. Today's mess can too easily be blamed on the entire team for it to count towards Howard getting the hook. Obviously we'll have to see what happens in Game Four but it'd have to be something pretty bad for Osgood to be in for Game Five.

I was in the building and had high hopes for the afternoon...good, lively crowd...expectations for a continuation of game 2...disappointed. BUT we haven't given up hope...Wings seemed to lose their umph for too-long stretches, still they had good chances. We couldn't entirely understand why the Phoenix goalie (whose name I won't attempt to spell) wasn't one of the 3 stars. I know...no excuses...but I can empathize with the exhaustion of coming off a long road trip, less than a day to recoup, really, and then on to another big game. While the Wings were playing at 3:00 in the afternoon, Phoenix was playing at 1:00...timing was off, passes were erratic, energy lacking. They'll need a better effort going into game 4...bring on the team psychologist.

I have a couple of questions/gripes, if you may. Why do Detroit fans (at all sporting events that I've attended in this town over the past 20 years) always leave early? It so irritates me. Stay in your frigging seats out of respect for the game and the players...! Does not seem to matter if the home team is winning or losing or if the game is tied...it's pathetic!! (I can't imagine leaving a concert or a movie or a play early to get to my car! What are they thinking?)

I also tend to find the tradition (and I know it's tradition) of throwing octopi (or snakes) on the ice extremely distasteful. First, octopi are a source of food for some, and worse, they are sentient beings with lives of their own to live. I can understand that back in the day this might have seemed like a quaint practice, but now that we're a bit more "evolved" I'd like to see the practice banned...throw those cute stuffies or the occasional fan of the opposing team, if you must, but not the real animal...it's just not right.

Wings crowds are notoriously late-arriving and early to leave. I don't understand it, either. My dad split season tickets when I was a kid and the only time he'd stay for the whole game is when he took me with, and only then because I'd refuse to leave.

I'm not strongly against throwing actual octopi but I do think switching to stuffed or otherwise fake versions of it would have one fantastic side-effect: It would let Al Sobotka twirl the octopus without worrying about getting "matter" on the ice.

You are right on...it makes me think by your article that you were reading my mind! I have seen this before and if it continues, the Wings will be out in the first round. No hustle, just spurts of heartless play...where is the driving engine within these players? Are they tired of the post season already?

They need to ask each other questions...of course, the Canadian Olympic team looked the same but then bounced back to take the gold...so, maybe Babcock can pull their heads out of their asses.

I wish there was a blog or twitter where we can speak directly to the players...DETROIT RED WING pride!!! Come on guys!! We believe!

maybe they need a spark lit under them with a goalie change like in '08 playoffs. Anyways, i still believe the third d-pair hurts the rest of the d-pairs when they have slow line changes. LEBBBBBBBBDA

For OldBroad:

I've been to NHL/Wings games in Phoenix (Game 2 and a few others), games in LA (a lot) and Games in Anaheim (more than a few). All seem to be just as notorious as Wings fans for showing up late and leaving early. I don't think it's a particular city or team, I think it's just people in general.

I'm one of those show up early and stay late folks myself.
