The Red Wings begin the 2009-2010 season today in Stockholm, Sweden, taking on the St. Louis Blues in the first game of a neutral site home-and-home series between the two teams.
Excluding last year's Winter Classic, this is Detroit's first neutral site game since they picked up a 3-0 win over the Hartford Whalers in Cleveland on February 24, 1994. In all the Red Wings are 8-2-3 in games played outside the home team's city (including one Chicago "home" game played at Detroit's Olympia Stadium, also played on February 24, this time in 1929).
The Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reported this morning that Derek Meech and Patrick Eaves will be the healthy scratches today for the Red Wings. This means the fourth line will be Justin Abdelkader, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby.
After missing Wednesday's exhibition against Farjestads BK with the flu, Chris Osgood is scheduled to start in net.
Globe Arena has the benches on the near side of the ice in relation to the cameras, like Rexall Place in Edmonton. Always confusing.
Holy crap. It didn't work but Bertuzzi just made a great move. Overskated the puck, reached his stick back between his legs and flipped it on net.
Damnit. Blues score, McClement from Winchester. Abdelkader was on Winchester but Oshie came in to put a pick on Abs to free up Winchester for the pass.
Ericsson ties it up! Knew one of the Swedes would have to come through.
I'm totally getting his name on my next jersey, with the Premiere patch.
Not that it matters, but I'm staring at a paused frame that shows Oshie was offsides on the second Kariya goal.
Edit: Nevermind, it went straight from Rafalski to Oshie so there's no offsides. Just a lazy play by the Wings.
If clutch and grab hockey is back (and it seems to be), the game has lost a fan...but then I'm just one old broad.
I absolute hate watching the Wings lose games because they played lazy. Two goals against for not playing defense. Funny how that's the difference between a win and a loss.
Yea Bertuzzi is gonna help the cause for that defense oh yea. I like bert but the deal doesn't really make sense. I didn't get to see the game but bert's +/- rating is gonna be very predictable this year.
