Red Wings at Blackhawks Game Thoughts

Some final thoughts on the Red Wings - Blackhawks matchup on Sunday night...

The Wings didn't seem to get really moving until midway through the third period. Once they got going, they were really in control, but their best chances didn't come until later in the game and were too little, too late.

Brian Rafalski had possibly his worst game as a Red Wing. My notes don't have any specific instances but I remember several of his passes going off-target or being intercepted. That said, his role is to be a puck-moving defenseman, those kind of things are going to happen.

Chicago's forecheck was better than Detroit's.

The Red Wings took some awful hooking calls. I don't mean ones that Mickey Redmond likes to complain about (though those were there for both teams), I mean unnecessary ones.

Nikolai Khabibulin outplayed Chris Osgood. Osgood had a decent game but Khabibulin made more big stops.

At least Henrik Zetterberg's scoring streak continued. That's been fun to watch and it's good to see a Red Wing in the lead of the scoring race.

Looking for win number 10! Let's make it happen

Only about a minute in and Khabibulin has had to be sharp.

Good bounce for Chicago leads to the Perrault goal, huge 5-on-3 now.

And the 'Hawks capitalize. Not a surprise, Robert Lang in on it again.

With how he suddenly got "better" I wonder if the Wings could sue him for breach of contract since he was obviously just half-assing it last season, he had to have been acting up by choice.

Great save by Khabibulin off Zetterberg, but then PP looking ineffective.

Huge goal by Hudler. Ken and Mickey haven't said anything but that should be a point for Zetterberg, continuing his streak.

Nice little fight between Kopecky and Sharp.

Hudler waltzes right in on goal and the Wings are right back in it, Kopecky won that fight, a bit of momentum shift here.

Urgh. Toews scores on essentially a 5 on 3.

Get rid of Lilja, he's cost detroit 2 goals already tonight just because he doesnt know how to select a stick. How often do you see the guys stick break a game? Put in Meech or someone that actually uses their body.

Lilja looked good in the playoffs last year but he's back to looking lost this season.

Wings' forecheck sucks right now.

Penalty to Chicago, important power play coming up.

Wide open net for Kronner and he missed. Ugh.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 11/11/2007 at 9:17 PM

But Nicky Lidstrom gets the Wings back in it!

Posted by YzerFan19 on 11/11/2007 at 9:18 PM

Great fake there.

Posted by Britishwingsfan on 11/11/2007 at 9:19 PM

The Wings owned the last 10 minutes or so but that wasn't enough. They never got anything going with Osgood out of the net.

And the streak is over. At least Zetterberg got the record. And now it dawns on me that I have to get up in 4 and a half hours.

sick of hearing about kane and toews, not going to lie, i had to mute the game cuz i get sick of hearing about the two of them. thank God we dont play against crosby.

Posted by foster016 on 11/11/2007 at 9:34 PM

Agreed about Kane and Towes, but only ever watching the FSN broadcast I wonder if other teams get that about Zetterberg and Datsyuk when they come to Detroit.

Posted by YzerFan19 on 11/11/2007 at 9:40 PM

good point. im sure theyve got to get sick of hearing about them, but then again i doubt other teams commentators are as repetitive as ken daniels. well at least we have one thing to look forward to, Spotlight on Pavel Datsyuk.

Thanks for the game notes. Didn't see much of, only last 6-7 minutes of 3rd. As for LANG -- what a turd -- I think he's scored or assisted in each of the games to date. Letting him go, though, is still a net gain for the WINGS ... he was lazy, didn't like getting hit, frequently had his stick lifted, and couldn't receive a pass most games last year for the WINGS ..... things WILL even out ...As for the Black Hawks .... I said it in a previous thread here .... they're for real this year. I don't expect they are going to challenge the WINGS for the Division, but they an improved team over the past 2-3 seasons. Good to see, actually, maybe a stronger inter-divisional rivalry coming ... in any case bring it on -- Keeps the WINGS honest !!!!!!

It's tough to say what is really going on with Lang, it's almost like he is rubbing our nose in it. Still I have to agree with skyguy about the fact that he is gone

I still say that we got screwed on the Williams deal. Now we have nothing to show for it since Calder left.

Did anyone else notice that little end to end rush by Cheli? He looked like the Chelios of old.

Enjoyed the fight with Kopecky, glad to see that he is stepping up.

Sucks that we lost, one of these days we will make it to 10! Oh well the next game is at the Joe and pay backs are a bit&h!

You made some valid points, in particular concerning the WILLIAMS deal .... regarding CHELLI ... didn't see that end to end, but CHELLI has been stepping into the play more often, and its refreshing to see -- if not downright AMAZING ... and, oh yes, the CHELLI of old ... some of the readership on this forum are probably too young to appreciate that ... but for those of us who remember the days he was in his prime, it brings back some great memories .... Yeah Chelli ...
